For our clients I always recommend that they mow their lawn prior to our fertilizer treatments. A mowed lawn allows for our granular fertilizers to have a clear path through the grass to the surface layer of the soil where it can be broken down and used efficiently.

Mowing your lawn ahead of a fertilizer treatment also ensures that your lawn will not be mowed shortly after the treatment. This allows time for the granular pellets to be watered into the turf so that there is less of a chance of being disturbed by mowers and heavy foot traffic.

Should I Fertilize My Lawn Before Or After It Rains?

There are products on the market in the category of “Weed and Feed” granulars. Lawns need to be wet from rain or irrigation for the pellets (granules) to stick to the weeds needing to be killed. I recommend against their use.

One of our many sayings at American Lawnscape is “Never fertilizer wet grass!”. This is a great standard rule for use of granular fertilizers as fertilizer on wet grass can lead to chemical burn. This isn’t always the case but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you do need to fertilize a wet lawn (for whatever reason) make sure that the lawn is thoroughly watered-in directly after the fertilizer application.

For liquid fertilizers, refrain from watering until the product has had the chance to be absorbed through the grass leaf blade.

Do I Need To Water In My Lawn Fertilizer?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”2e1ca0a8-a515-4ca3-8814-65eea4b82393″ text_font=”||||||||” text_text_color=”#0A0000″ text_letter_spacing=”1px” text_line_height=”1.5em” link_font=”|700|||||||” link_text_color=”#71B100″ header_2_font=”Futura||||||||” header_4_font=”Futura|600|||||||” text_font_size_tablet=”15px” text_font_size_phone=”14px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

If the fertilizer that was applied was in a granular form, it’s best to water it in immediately after the application. If this is not possible, ensure that the product is watered in prior to the next mowing. One full irrigation cycle is sufficient.

If the fertilizer that was applied is liquid, watering in directly after application is not necessary.

Always refer to the product manufacturers specific instructions regarding the use and application of their products.
